Anthony's Story
Total Assistance: $8,010
“Unfortunately, no treatment was successful, and Anthony’s infection began to move up his leg. To stop the infection from spreading Anthony had a below the knee amputation.” Anthony had a foot wound that would not heal, despite the best efforts of his doctor and care team. An infection in the wound spread throughout his leg and led to a below-the-knee amputation in February 2022. After hospitalization and rehab, Ronald returned home in June 2022, struggling to adapt to life with a prosthetic leg. Amidst the mental toll of losing his leg, he applied for Social Security Disability but was denied. Returning to work as a chef for a professional baseball team , Anthony contributes to household expenses, while he and his lawyer appeal his disability decision. However, appeals can take up to a year and his financial difficulties persist, exacerbated by his wife's fixed income and her own medical issues. Commuting to work poses safety concerns, and his disability makes him a target for crime. With a broken rollator walker, Anthony seeks assistance primarily for rent and utility bills. Despite these challenges, Anthony remains determined to navigate his new normal and contribute to his family's well-being.
