Erin's Story
Total Assistance: $20,500
When Erin’s six-year-old son, Joe, started coming home from school with bruises, she worried that he was being abused. Joe has Angelman Syndrome. He’s non-verbal and can’t eat, bathe, dress himself, or walk without assistance. In February, Erin received a call from Joe’s school. His teacher had physically assaulted him in the head with a stapler. Erin pressed charges and pulled Joe out of school immediately, but without a safe school for him to attend, she was forced to leave her job.
Then COVID-19 hit, and Erin was unable to return to work. She’s been using her tax return to pay for rent and living expenses, but she’s quickly running out of funds. Erin is reluctant to send Joe to school again, fearing for his safety, but knows she needs to in order to return to work. She’s also noticed Joe’s quickly began to regress without access to the ABA therapy he had been receiving. After significant research, she’s found a new school with a suitable environment, but it’s 45 minutes away from their home.
Erin is looking for a new job with hopes to relocate close to the school, but she’s concerned with how she’s going to fund a move and maintain her finances in the meantime. Because of your donations, we’ve been able to cover Erin’s security deposit, next year of rent and six sessions of ABA Therapy for Joe.
